Poker Timer

For many years i gave away a free poker timer to anyone who wanted it which many of you used and enjoyed, however i decided to write a more professional program with more features (coz when i'm not getting screwed by muppets on the tables its what computer programmers do to make a buck lol), so unfortunately the old poker timer has been retired and the new one taking over. I know you are all tightwads, and dont wanna pay anything, but it's only £10 stinking quid a copy, and you never know, you might actually win it back off me one day :)

How We Run Our Home Games

Below are the basics of how we run our home games, We aint pro's doing it for a living, so what we aim towards is for everyone to have a good time, and if someone takes an early bath, you don't want them sitting around for hours waiting till the next game starts. Having said that, you dont want some glorified all-in 'turbo' where you can't use that 'poker craft' you learned from watching Gus Hansen on the telly, so below are the main hit points that work for us to strike a good balance.

  • Avoid Having too many chips on the table as it's a PIA to keep counting when someone moves 'all-in' (as tends to be a regular occurance). It might look good on the telly, but in reality wastes time.

  • Avoid Having chips with too many different denominations, 3 colours are plenty. we use Green=25, Black=100, Purple=500

  • Avoid Having blind levels too long, and keeping blinds too small. If you run a rebuy (which we do for an hour) then you can have the game taking forever. You need to balance a reasonable game, with those that are KO early getting bored having to wait too long for the next muppet fest.

  • When i bought my chipset i paid extra to have values printed on them as I initially thought it would prevent people constantly asking me 'how much are these worth', but this isn't really necessary coz u soon get used to 'em, however if u are playing with total novices for one off games, such as family at Christmas, it might be worth mounting one of each on a piece of card with the value written underneath, and displaying it where all can see

  • Buy the best chipset u can afford. They aint that expensive and last a lifetime. Ours are 11.5g clay suited which i suppose is a 'medium' type. The cheapo 8g chips for example are total crapola, don't feel right, and are harder to do 'chip tricks' with lol. If you want that 'monte carlo millionaire' feel, push the boat out and go for the 15g chips, nice......

  • Get some decent cards (plastic preferably), with large index on. a good pack will last ages, feel much better to handle, and are easier to deal. Cheapo paper cards like the 'waddingtons' type you use to play knockout whist with the kids just don't cut it im afraid

  • Format

  • 15 Minute levels, Which are: 25/50, 50/100, 100/200, 200/400, 300/600, 500/1000, 700/1400, 1000/2000, 1500/3000 (I dont think we've ever got past a big blind of 3k), you will be down to having an all in fest every hand before that time arrives

  • 1500 starting chips, comprising 8 x Green (25), 8 x Black (100), 1 Purple (500)

  • Re-buy's for one hour, but u have to be BELOW 1500 chips to rebuy.

  • Re-buy's are given 3 x 500 chips (purple), changed down in the school if needed.

  • No Add-ons (you can end up with too many chips in the school), but that's up to you !!

  • At the 1hr break, we sometime change the green chips (25's) into 100's, as u don't need 'em any more.

  • Games Usually take 1.5-2hrs, but we have had then last as little as 45 mins if gambling fever takes over and someone wins a gigantic multi-way all in hehe.

  • If we have 6 players or less we pay top 2, 70%/30%. If We have any more then its 3 paid, 50%, 30%, 20%. what often happens is the last 2 warriors remaining will share the money to speed things up and get another game going, but that's upto you'
